Jack Kristiansen

every so often

on her walks

her eyes catch a stranger’s stare

meeting her glance

unblinking, bemused eyes

holding her glance

for more than a moment,

a gaze glad with the promise

of exuberant talk

but already aloof

with knowing that their eyes meet

only in passing

that they will walk on

without looking back

as if conspiring

to end a sentence that insists

nothing happens
