The Unfamiliar Road

Ben Martin

What if I’m driving at midnight,

when I catch the ghost riding shotgun

in the blue shiver of streetlamps,

this sick vapor sitting on its nerves

like a fog spread out over January,

whose queer liquid eyes would disappear

like rain in the wrong direction,

flocking back into the clouds,

only to puddle up on some other road,

on the other side of my life?
