Poetry Squares

Margaret A. Robinson

Cleared place on the desk.

Raked pile of leaves.

Kitchen floor swept.

A quatrain might please.

Sometimes I just

(beat, beat)

want to make brownies.

Any friend's birthday.

Teenager's first date.

An old neighbor's passing.

Elegy. Chocolate.

Sometimes I just

(amen)

want to make brownies.

Last lines surprise.

Sugar sifts through the mesh.

Days shrink, batter rises -

eggs, butter, walnuts.

Sometimes I just

(oh yeah)

want to make brownies.
