Inside a Lump of Swiss Cheese

 J.A. Tyler

Inside a lump of swiss cheese

in Larry’s fridge

there is a hole

a finger-sized hole

that leads to the other side of things

it leads to a place

where he is no longer meek but sexual

no longer shy but powerful

where he rides a harley

and wears leather pants

where women and men alike

beg for his home number

a place where he becomes

more superhero than anything

but Larry is mostly bored at night

and whittles away at the block of cheese

while watching meaningless tv

and thinking he should take time to vacuum

and as he slices

the hole grows more finite

and just before midnight

as he nods to the typewriter sounds of the people’s court

the hole is eaten away into nothingness

and he’ll never again know the feel

of the other side of things
